Monica Clendenin At age 40 I found myself without purpose in life. My son had gone off to college and my husband worked full time and also went to college at night and worked weekends. The more time I spent alone with myself, the more I realized I didn’t know what to do now that nobody needed me anymore. The depression quickly sat in and so did the aches and pains of years of not taking care of myself. I was at a point in my life where I was considering gastric bypass surgery and actually went through all the preliminary testing. I couldn’t believe I was thinking about doing something drastic to my body just because I had lost the will to make good choices for myself.

MariaI met Emily in July 2008. I was in the middle of a New Years resolution to lose 50 pounds and my weight loss had stalled. When I signed up for boot camp, I told my husband that I wanted to do one or two sessions, just to kick start my weight loss. Now, almost 2 years later, I can’t imagine not having Emily and Empowered involved in my exercise program. Not only did I lose those 50 pounds, but I also ran my first 5k in October 2008. Working with Emily in 2009, she encouraged me to pursue my personal goal of running one race per month, a lofty goal for someone who became a runner at 36 three months before. And she did that while teaching me to listen to my body so I could do it without injury. In fact, I ran 18 races that included 3 half marathons and a sub four hour full marathon 13 months after my first 5k! Emily is my mentor, my trainer, and my friend. She inspires me and pushes me to achieve goals that I never believed I could. All of her trainers, although different in approach, are able to find a balance between pushing you past the limits you thought you had while preventing you from burning out. Empowered not only worked with my physical body but instilled in me the desire to live a healthy lifestyle, to put in the hard work, to eat well, and most importantly to believe that I can accomplish anything.
